About OpenTuneSource
What is OpenTuneSource?
OpenTuneSource is a community-run tune sharing repository with the goal of allowing people to find basemaps for their specific car and modification combination.
Who created OpenTuneSource?
OpenTuneSource was created by Josh Solanes. For the rest of this page "me", "my", "I", etc refer to me (Josh Solanes)
About Josh Solanes
KProTuners
In early 2011 I created KProTuners.com, a much more rudimentary tune sharing website specific to Acura RSX's and K-Pro ECUs. KProTuners became fairly popular but ultimately was irrecoverably hacked. However, KProTuner's popularity has been in the back of my mind since and ultimately lead me to create OpenTuneSource.
Cars
I owned 2 Acura RSX's from 2003, before they had any standalone ECUs or major modifications available, through 2017. In 2017 I sold the RSX for a stock low mileage 2001 Miata. My wife also had a unique car for several years: a 2008 Subaru Legacy GT spec.B.
During my time owning RSX's I ran a K-Pro ECU for a few years and later an AEM Series 2 for several years both on my own tunes with no reliability issues making decent power. My wife's previous Legacy GT spec.B had a Cobb, and my current Miata has a Beer Money Motorsports NB2 ECU, self tuned again.
Professional Career and Relevance
I've been a professional Software Engineer since 2014 and have learned a lot professionally, so OpenTuneSource is a much more generalized and more well thought out attempt using much of what I've learned as well as giving me an opportunity to experiment as I implement new features for OpenTuneSource.
Other Major Contributors
Other people who have had a significant impact on OpenTuneSource in various ways include:
- Travis Dykstra for letting me bounce ideas off of him, for giving his thoughts on it, and for offering his cloud knowledge and thorough beta testing
- My wife for also giving ideas, letting me talk about it constantly with her, and for letting me take the time to write OpenTuneSource
- My work colleagues who were nice enough to give me ideas and suggestions (often technical things to try or things to watch out for)
Why was OpenTuneSource created?
My hobbies for most of my life have been primarily: software development, cars, and car tuning.
For a while I had the itch to write some software as a personal project but had trouble coming up with an idea. When talking about some of my past tuning experience with Travis Dykstra I had the idea of creating another tune repository as I feel like it might be useful to the car community.
Will OpenTuneSource ever become a paid for service?
The goal is to keep OpenTuneSource free indefinitely. If traffic becomes far too much and cost becomes too great then I may need to find ways to fund the site but I don't anticipate this becoming an issue.
How often is OpenTuneSource maintained?
I do work a normal day job but have spent considerable free time working on OpenTuneSource nightly as needed. If you see anything you think can be improved please post in our Discord.
I plan to continue maintaining OpenTuneSource as long as it seems useful to others.
